What Size Rug Do I Need
One of the most frequently asked questions people come to me with is, “what size rug do I need?” There are some simple factors that determine the size, and it sometimes comes down to personal preference or functionality. In most cases size ‘does’ matter!
For example:
* Under a dining table…as a general rule you add 2 feet minimum all the way around the table. If your top is 48″ x 72″ (4ft x 6ft) you would add 4 ft to the width, and 4 ft to the length, giving you a rug size of 8ft x 10 ft.
* Under a 48″ round table (4 ft) you would add 4 ft to each direction (as if it were square), and you get an 8′ round rug.
* In a family room or living room if you only want the rug in front of the sofa, and under a cocktail table you would use a 5 x 8, or a 6 X 9.
* In a family room or living room a more common look is to go with an 8 x 10, or a 9 x 12 and put the sofa half on the rug so the front legs are on and the back legs are off.
* For hallway runners and stairs, try to leave a 4″ to 8″ border around the rug depending on the width of the hall or stairs. You do not want to ever walk on the edges in the length if at all possible.
Custom sizes are also available if you can wait, but usually there is a standard size that will work.
